Shiatsu is a primary health care system which takes place at floor level on a futon. Both practitioner and client are fully-clothed.
By means of questioning, looking and palpating the hara (the tummy), the practitioner is able to tell which of the client's 12 body systems (the heart, liver, lungs and so on) are out of balance. And by treating the appropriate meridian or energy pathway, blocks can be released and a free flow of body energy (known to the Japanese as Ki) maintained.
The meridians or energy pathways pass through the joints and limbs. By unblocking energy (blocked Ki) in these areas, the shiatsu practitioner may help the body repair from injury, reduce inflammation and oedema such as bursitis, strengthen weak ligaments in the knee or back and provide pain relief throughout the body. As a treatment, shiatsu can be extremely relaxing and this in itself allows the body to access its own energy reserves and healing abilities.
